Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)/ Utility Coordination & Design

Utility coordination is an important part of infrastructure rebuilding and expansion. Amani has experience with Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) to identify potential conflicts and set up communication lines among the involved organizations to obtain inaccessible or incomplete records. Using nondestructive techniques, Amani engineers identify potential conflicts among the various utilities and future designs. Amani performs both designating and locating phases of SUE employing following techniques / methods:

• Electronic (direct connection, clamping or induction)
• Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
• Sonde Locating
• Acoustic Locating.

Designating uses geophysical methods to confirm the existence and horizontal position of underground utilities. Locating determines the exact position of each utility by using “soft” excavation equipment such as vacuum excavators to uncover each utility at critical points along its path to determine the exact horizontal and vertical positions, what most utility company and contractor personnel call potholing.

Our utility services can be at four levels of detail. Level D compiles a drawing of all utilities based on the records. Level C takes the drawing generated in level D for an on-site observation to resolve any conflicts between the records and utility indicators discovered. Level B physically designate all underground utilities using non-destructive geophysical techniques. Level A exposes the underground utilities to obtain horizontal and vertical information and restore surface to original condition.
